Chapter 14

“You mean to tell me that little man said that you were gonna die?” Lady asked later when I was back at the house.

I scraped the last of the chicken and broccoli mixture for a casserole into a glass dish and opened the oven door. “Yes, but it doesn’t mean anything.” I shoved the meal inside and closed the door. “It’s nothing to worry about.”

“How is it not? Tiny men do not lie.” Lady sat on her haunches and stared at me. “You need to march your booty down to that Mystic and hand him back that fortune. Tell him you don’t want it.”

I laughed. “I don’t think it’s that simple.”

“Simple is as simple does,” she replied tartly.

“Um, I think that’s stupid is as stupid does. It’s from the movie, Forrest Gump.”

“I don’t know anything about a movie. All I know is that saying. My mama used to tell it to me when I was a baby.”

“Your mama didn’t talk,” I reminded her.

“That ain’t got nothing to do with it.” She crossed to her water dish and took a few laps. “All I’m saying is, maybe if you give back the piece of paper, you won’t wind up dead as a doornail.”

I chuckled. “It’ll be fine.”

But it was unnerving reading the paper right after that man had nearly been run over. Malene and her crew hadn’t helped, either. They just kept saying it was a fluke, that nothing bad was going to happen.

Then why had my stomach been knotted into a pretzel for the past few hours?

What I needed was a nice meal with a hot guy and maybe some wine. That would make me feel better. Right on cue, the doorbell rang. Perfect. I’d get about forty-five minutes to talk to Rufus, and then we’d eat.

I opened the door to find him holding a small bouquet of flowers. “For you.”

I grinned. “Thank you.”

He eased closer, pressing the flowers between us. His lips brushed mine, and for a moment they lingered. “I’ve missed you,” he murmured when we parted.

“It’s only been a day.”

“That’s much too long.” Rufus brushed a strand of crimson hair from my eyes. “If things were my way, I’d see you every morning, noon and night.”

“That sounds like a big commitment.”

Rufus chuckled uncomfortably. He glanced at his feet, and I realized that we were just standing in the doorway awkwardly.

“Come in,” I told him.

I led him into the kitchen, where I vased the flowers. Lady padded over to Rufus excitedly. “Clem got a fortune that says she’s gonna die! You’ve got to save her, Rufus! Save my mama.”

His brow quirked. “What’s all this about?”

“It’s a long, boring story.”

“Try me.”

So I spent the next fifteen minutes explaining everything that had happened at the house, being sure not to leave any details out because as soon as I did, Lady added them back in, with flair.

“Remember, that’s when you told that man he was being stupid. That he needed to keep hold of his fortune,” she embellished.

“That didn’t happen.
